Introduction to CAMECA

CAMECA stands as a pioneer and global leader in the development and provision of micro- and atomic-scale materials analysis instruments. With a long-standing reputation for advanced technologies such as Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) and Atom Probe Tomography (APT), CAMECA has enabled breakthroughs in materials science, geology, and the semiconductor industry. The company’s instruments allow for the analysis of elemental composition and three-dimensional structure at the atomic level, offering observation and characterization capabilities for materials that few other technologies can match.
Founded in 1929 in France, CAMECA initially began as a manufacturer of cinema projectors. However, leveraging its foundation in precision mechanics, optics, and electronics, the company quickly pivoted to the field of scientific instrumentation, becoming a trusted partner to the international research community. Starting in the 1950s, CAMECA pioneered the development of Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA), followed by SIMS in the 1960s, solidifying its definitive leadership position in these analytical technologies. Notably, the development of Atom Probe Tomography (APT) further expanded its capabilities to provide 3D analysis with single-atom precision.
Recently, in 2024, CAMECA acquired Polygon Physics, thereby reinforcing its leading position in ion source technology—a core element for the development of next-generation analytical instruments. All of CAMECA’s research, manufacturing, and service operations adhere to the ISO 9001 quality standard, ensuring strict control from design, fabrication, and installation to technical support.
CAMECA’s manufacturing facilities, located in the Paris and Grenoble regions of France, as well as in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, are equipped with modern infrastructure. This includes cleanroom production lines, opto-electronic simulation technology, advanced CAD systems, and a powerful computational network. In addition, CAMECA has established a global sales and service network with a presence in Brazil, China, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the United States, complemented by a wide network of agents in many other countries to ensure prompt and effective customer support.
Today, CAMECA is a business unit of AMETEK, Inc., a leading global provider of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, where it operates within the AMETEK Materials Analysis Division. With a mission focused on developing the highest-performance analytical tools, CAMECA continues to provide researchers and industries with advanced characterization solutions, serving applications from fundamental research to semiconductor manufacturing and new materials development.
